Comparing per-agent and usage-based support pricing models
Compare agent seats, contacts, AI sessions and outcomes against the same support workload and billing term.
Compare paid access and billable activity against one 12-month support workload. A seat charge follows a paid role or access commitment; a usage charge follows an event the provider defines, such as a session, contact or AI resolution.
Most of these products combine both. Build the term total from the same team and period, adding each model's measured usage without treating tickets, contacts, sessions and outcomes as interchangeable.
Identify what each unit counts
Count the administrators, agents and collaborators who need a paid role, then record any minimum seat commitment for the full term. Ask when the commitment can be reduced; on Intercom non-contract subscriptions, seat changes update with pro-rata adjustments, while contract accounts are billed for committed seats even if fewer are used.
Count usage by the provider's billable-event rule. In Freshdesk, one Freddy AI Agent session covers interactions within a 72-hour window from the customer's first email or a 24-hour window from the start of a Freshdesk Omni Chat AI conversation.
Help Scout contact-based plans count contacts helped, with the contact tier based on the average usage of the previous three months. Help Scout AI Answers counts one resolution per AI chat session resolved without human help. It charges only when the AI answers the question and the customer does not request more help after the last AI response.
For every meter, check how repeat interactions count and when usage resets. One ticket is not automatically one contact, session, Fin outcome or AI Answers resolution.

Compare the documented models
Zendesk charges per agent on Support Team and Suite plans. Support Team is £15 per agent/month paid yearly, Suite Team is £45 and Suite Professional is £89; Suite Team includes AI agents and adds capabilities such as omnichannel routing and messaging.
Freshdesk charges per agent, with annual billing rates of $19/month for Growth, $55 for Pro and $89 for Enterprise. Eligible new customers receive a one-time allocation of 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions; additional packs of 100 sessions cost $49 and are added for the current billing cycle.
Freddy AI Copilot costs $29 per agent/month on Freshdesk Pro and Enterprise. Keep this agent-based add-on separate from Freddy AI Agent session packs, which count usage rather than paid agent access.
Help Scout has user-based plans that bill team users and contact-based plans that include contacts helped, with scalable options as usage grows. Contact tiers use the average of the previous three months; get the account's plan price and contact allowance to calculate the base charge.
Help Scout AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution on paid plans. The charge is billed in arrears, so the month's usage appears on the next billing date.
Intercom bills Full seats on its helpdesk plans: Essential is $29, Advanced $85 and Expert $132 per seat/month. Advanced includes 20 Lite seats and Expert includes 50. Fin starts at $0.99 per outcome, and can also be used with another helpdesk with no seats required.
Intercom includes unlimited live chat, support email, in-app chats, banners and tooltips. Email campaigns, SMS, WhatsApp and Phone are pay-as-you-go; on non-contract subscriptions, seat changes can update usage and pro-rata charges, while contract accounts pay for committed seats.
Calculate the comparable total
Use the same 12-month staffing and customer workload for every quote. Let A be the paid seats required, and record the actual Freshdesk sessions, Intercom Fin outcomes, Help Scout resolutions and contacts generated by that workload under each product's counting rules.
At the stated yearly-billed Zendesk rates, the 12-month core charge is £180 × A for Support Team, £540 × A for Suite Team or £1,068 × A for Suite Professional. Add any account-specific AI charge in the quote and confirm the AI-agent allowance for Suite Team.
At Freshdesk's stated annual rates, the 12-month base is $228 × A for Growth, $660 × A for Pro or $1,068 × A for Enterprise. Add $49 × P, where P is the number of 100-session packs purchased during the term; apply the one-time 500-session allocation only for eligible new customers.
If x agents have Freddy AI Copilot on Pro or Enterprise, add $348 × x for 12 months at $29 per agent/month. Keep this separate from the session-pack total.
At Intercom's listed monthly seat rates, a 12-month base is $348 × A for Essential, $1,020 × A for Advanced or $1,584 × A for Expert. Add $0.99 times the number of Fin outcomes at the starting rate; confirm the applicable rate and billing option in the quote.
For Help Scout, add the quoted user-based or contact-based subscription charge to $0.75 times the billable AI Answers resolutions in the term. Obtain the account's plan price and, for contact-based billing, its included contact allowance and tier rate.
Use one currency for the comparison and confirm which dollar currency Freshdesk and Intercom quote. Help Scout identifies its amounts as USD, while Zendesk's listed rates are in pounds; also confirm whether each Australian quote includes GST.
