Zendesk/Assembled scheduling, capacity forecasting features
Compare Zendesk WFM, Assembled and Amazon Connect on forecast inputs, staffing calculations, schedule controls and documented limits.
Zendesk WFM and Assembled both connect demand forecasts with staffing and schedules, but their documented workflows and configuration details differ.
Compare them using the same channels, service targets, planning horizon and demand changes. Then check how each turns forecast demand into coverage agents can work.
Set the comparison brief
Specify channels, queues, opening hours, response targets, available history and planning horizon. Include a predictable busy period and an unusual event.
Decide whether the team needs hiring estimates, interval coverage, agent rosters or all three. Record which system owns contact data and which publishes the roster.
Ask both providers to show the same steps: inspect imported history and its counting unit; review and adjust a forecast; calculate required staffing; apply availability and shift rules; publish a schedule; and identify a gap after demand changes.
Check forecast units, missing history and unusual days; capacity assumptions such as backlog, occupancy, shrinkage and concurrency; schedule constraints such as skills, leave, breaks and shifts; and permissions, draft visibility and agent notifications.
Zendesk WFM
Zendesk WFM uses historical ticket data and workstreams to forecast inbound volume for up to a year. It calculates required staffing in full-time equivalents (FTE), and workstream forecasts inform schedules.
Workstreams group tickets, chat and voice using conditions such as form, brand, region or channel. Their forecasts recalculate when conditions change, so test the proposed workstream rules against the team's actual queues.
WFM is an add-on. Activation imports six months of ticket history; forecasting requires at least one month of data and uses no more than two years. Using longer history requires a manual import request, and teams can import their own data into a workstream forecast.
Zendesk WFM includes spam in ticket history and counts each entry into a workstream, including moves and reopenings. Tickets created before the add-on purchase count towards historical forecast volume but are not matched to workstreams in the agent activity page.
The manager workflow covers long-term planning and short-term schedule changes, as well as real-time monitoring of agent attendance and activity. Admin permission is required for the described WFM features; verify how availability, skills, leave, breaks, shift rules and agent notifications work in the intended account.
Zendesk WFM can be bought separately or with Zendesk QA in the WEM bundle, which is offered at a discount. Online-assisted and self-service account owners or billing admins can buy through the Subscription page; managed accounts require contact with a Zendesk representative or Sales. An add-on is purchased for all agents in the account.
Key Configuration & Limitations
- Add-on Purchase ModelAll agents in account (separate or bundled with WEM)
- Workstream Impact on ForecastChanges trigger recalculation; tickets not matched to workstreams in agent activity page if created pre-purchase
Assembled
Assembled describes forecasts based on historical contact volume, real-time queue insights and projected email backlog. Its forecasting options include multiple models with custom options, and its forecasting information describes accounting for seasonal patterns, campaigns and outages.
Its product comparison lists forecasting for email backlog and asynchronous channels, and scheduling across non-Zendesk contact platforms. Assembled also supports automatic schedule generation; test how forecast demand becomes required staffing and how the schedule handles availability, skills, leave, breaks and shift rules.
Assembled says time-off requests can flow directly from connected HR systems into schedules. Its comparison lists real-time adherence on all plans; verify which plan or configuration includes the other forecasting, scheduling and integration features the team needs.
Confirm the usable history window, import process, model inputs, schedule publishing controls and agent notifications before purchase. Test the same queue and demand changes used for Zendesk WFM, including how asynchronous SLAs and backlog affect the staffing requirement.
Assembled Forecasting & Scheduling Capabilities
- Forecast Models
- Multiple customisable models with seasonal, campaign and outage adjustments
- Backlog Forecasting
- Supports asynchronous SLA and backlog forecasting
- Automatic Schedule Generation
- Available; test integration with availability, skills and leave rules
Amazon Connect (not compared)
Amazon Connect is also named among call-centre workforce-management products.
Decide from the remaining gap
Zendesk WFM’s documented path centres on Zendesk ticket history and workstreams, with stated history limits and an all-agent add-on purchase. Assembled describes historical, live-queue and backlog forecasting, custom models, cross-platform scheduling and direct HR time-off sync.
For either product, use the same test to check contact counting, forecast-to-staffing assumptions, schedule constraints, publishing permissions and agent notifications. Confirm the relevant plan, data import and configuration rules before committing.
